Greater Johnstown Young Artists Exhibit Awards

Central Cambria Middle School students Lauren Sauka (pictured), and Nathan Hentzel received awards for their artwork in the annual Greater Johnstown Young Artists Exhibit, held at the Community Arts Center of Cambria County.

The Exhibit was displayed in the Arts center throughout the month of May. Other MIddle School students participating in the exhibit are; Gabbi Shirk, Kylie Nelson, Breanna Morris, Katrina Shedd, Alyssa Ford, and Libby Craig.

Congratulations to all these students whose hard work and dedication have earned them this distinction.

ATTENTION CENTRAL CAMBRIA SCHOOL DISTRICT PARENTS SUMMER REGISTRATION

In an effort to manage the high volume of changes that occur at the beginning of each new academic school year, Central Cambria School District will continue to offer a convenient service to parents with students of all grade levels entering the District to register over the summer months. Additionally, student withdrawals and change of addresses will be accommodated. This service is offered at Central Cambria’s Administrative Office, Tuesdays, June 6, 2017 through August 22, 2017, by appointment. Please contact Tracey Heeney at 814-472-8870, extension 311, to make an appointment. We highly encourage parents to take advantage of this service.

CC Students "Blooming"

On April 29 and 30th The Ebensburg Main Street Partnership hosted the 19^th annual “Art in Bloom” exhibit at the Cambria County Courthouse.  The exhibit features some of the best amateur and professional artists from the region and is juried by professionals working in the field of fine arts.  This year Cambria Elementary student Catherine Wilt, (pictured here with her piece “The Wonderful Town”), was selected as the 1^st place winner in the “Dimensional” category! 

Under the instruction of art teacher Mrs. Jessica Davis, Catherine’s award is quite an achievement considering the level of work she was exhibiting with.

In the weeks leading up to the exhibit many other students from The Elementary and Middle schools also had the opportunity to exhibit their work in the window fronts of the downtown Ebensburg.  Here are a few images of their work as well.

Congratulations to all students and their families whose efforts received this recognition.  Central Cambria students continually show the community that our district values a well-rounded education in the arts and creative thinking. 

Decision Day at Central Cambria

On Friday, April 21st, the Central Cambria School District celebrated Decision Day as a cap to our Safe and Kind Week.  At the middle and high school levels, students were treated to a mini college fair and random giveaways of donated college gear as seniors lined up to “pin” themselves on the Decision Day map.  The map was then visible for all students to see what the seniors’ post high school plans were, which included 4 or 2 year colleges, tech or trade schools, military commitments, and entering directly into the workforce.

Family Fun Night for ages 3-5

UPJ STEM Professions Day 2017

On April 12, 2017, sixteen STEM students attended STEM Professions Day at UPJ.  The purpose of this event is to encourage more students to consider careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.  The program featured up-to-date information about career paths in the STEM professions, diverse workshops conducted by UPJ’s renowned faculty, and student research projects.  The students were able to choose to attend 3 different concurrent presentations that appealed to their individual interests.  The students were guests for lunch on a campus.  It was a great experience for all students involved.  

PMEA 6th Grade Band Fest

Eleven students from Central Cambria Middle School participated in the 2017 PMEA 6th Grade Band Fest on March 31st at Hollidaysburg Area Junior High. The honors band featured talented 6th grade musicians from Cambria, Blair, Bedford and Somerset counties. Representing CCMS were (front row, l to r ) Jordan Krawcion, Marissa Stanovich, Kaitlyn Rozsi, Madison Dryzal, Sarah Beth Mish. (back row, l to r) Julia Hoffman, Emma Pablic, Destiney Wissinger, Kamryn Kamzik, Joy Sodmont and Ava Monborne. 

Collaborative Food Drive

For our collaborative food drive our entire district brought in 2,700 pounds of food.  The pantry was very happy with the amount that we unloaded.  

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in helping our community food pantry. A BIG thank you goes out to Kim Anderson from the Cambria Elementary School PTO for heading this project. Also, a thank you to the other PTO members who came to help load the bus! 

Another BIG thank you to First Student for volunteering to help with transporting all of the items that were collected!

"Stop the Bleeding" Training

Central Cambria staff participated in "Stop the Bleed training in collaboration with Cambria County 911 Services and Conemaugh Hospital.  As part of emerging safety plans, teachers, administrators, and support staff learned how to apply tourniquets and provide immediate medical intervention that could make the difference between life and death.

Faculty Fun Run at Central Cambria

On Monday. October 10th, a district-wide staff 5K Fun Run/Wellness Walk was held at the Central Cambria High School Track.  The event started at approximately 2:00 P.M and ended around 4:00 P.M with snack bags, prizes, and a basket raffle held shortly after everyone finished running and walking.  The basket raffle produced proceeds of $340 which is being donated to Relay For Life, Tremendous community support made it possible for over $750 worth of prizes and incentives to be given away during the health event! Faculty members could run individually or in groups of up to 5 to make “competing” more fun.  Some teams  dressed up in tutus, matching outfits, and yes, even “grammar police.”

Though the 105 faculty and staff members helped to liven the event, a lot went on behind the scenes in order to make the event go off without a hitch. The CCSD Wellness Committee spent many weeks promoting and preparing for the October health initiative.  5K t-shirts were designed by Grace Gerlach and Melanie Glavach, as well as having numerous helpers who coordinated baskets, tickets, registration, prizes, photos, and news articles; Over 84 students offered their time to volunteer, but, due to overwhelming demand, the number was limited to a small group of students who were  able to help.

One shot was fired to symbolize the start of the 5K, and every competitor started out strong. Some competed hard, some ran, a lot walked, but, no one did it alone. Every person made sure to stay with their group, or find a new buddy to chat with to make the journey slightly less arduous. Jackson Elementary came out on top for overall participation and will receive a free casual dress-down day on the date of their choosing. Great job, everyone!

Central Cambria Diversity Program

On Wednesday, August 31st, 2016, the student body of Central Cambria gathered and attended a diversity program by grade level. Bruce Haselrig, the former Assistant City Manager, City of Johnstown, led the two period program and discussed a wide variety of ways to open themselves up to the idea of diversity. The program was suggested to be given to the student body in an effort to prepare them for diversity after high school. The program preached tolerance, acceptance, and love for people regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or anything that makes someone unique.

Haselrig has been acknowledged for being a wonderful speaker and has accepted many rewards for his programs dealing with not only diversity, but also the dynamics of leadership and staff development. Being a former classroom teacher, Haselrig confidently commands the room with his positive message and happy disposition.

This specific program was very interactive with activities ranging from lining up by your birthdays, discussing birth places, and participating in a variety of brain teasers and fun games, all showing that everyone is unique and different in this “big bowl of salad” called life.

Junior Libby Lees said, “I wasn’t expecting to have that much fun at the program. It was definitely one of the most fun ones I’ve ever been to.” Junior Sam Lane agreed saying, “ Everyone was laughing and learning at the same time. [Haselrig] definitely knew how to command a room and made us all feel special in our own way.”

All in all, the diversity program was very well received and the student body hopes we will have more programs like it in the future.
